There was an air of excitement as everyone awaited the arrival of Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister of Education and Second Minister of Defence to receive a $3 million cheque donation from The Ngee Ann Kongsi on behalf of the school, and to officially open the new Eden School Building at Bukit Batok.
The event was held at the school café which was beautifully dressed up with a garden theme. After a simple welcome and introduction by Ms Denise Phua, Supervisor, Eden School Board and Mrs Jenny Lai, Principal, our guests were taken on a tour of the school where they saw students in class and at the different work sites and special rooms.
All guests then returned to the café for the cheque donation and launch. A moving speech by Ms Phua and Mr Ho Swee Huat, Autism Association (Singapore) Chairman and Vice- Chairman of the Eden School Board encapsulated the key message of the event; that all people with autism can achieve and contribute to society given the right environment and opportunities to learn and practice meaningful skills.
The guests were treated to a simple tea reception after the event, and many left impressed with the hospitality of the staff and touched by the journey that the school has taken since its inception as Singapore Autism School in September 2005.
