Special Olympics Bocce Competition

Eden School participated in the Special Olympics Bocce Competition 2012, held at CHIJ St Nicholas School at Toa Payoh, for the first time. The students, Aqram, Benson, Wee Kit and Maheswaran, have been training for the event since the start of the year and their hard work really paid off. The athletes and their supporters enjoyed themselves thoroughly on this special day and everyone went home with smiles and sweat.

The day started with meeting Aqram and his family in school to take the transport to the competition venue. The team experienced a small adventure (bus went to the wrong location) before arriving at the venue in time for the competition.

The event kicked off with the Special Olympics Oath taking ceremony by all participants. Aqram and Wee Kit were chosen to stand on the stage for this solemn and memorable moment. After that, the competition started with Benson and Wee Kit competing with other athletes in the Singles event. Benson competed in Division E whereas Wee Kit competed in Division D. Both students did the school proud – Benson came in 4th and Wee Kit won the gold medal, in their respective divisions.

Next came the Doubles event and it was time for Aqram and Maheswaran to show off their skills.  The competitors were tough and the event lasted for about one hour. Our students persevered under the cheers and support of our parent supporters. Tips were shared and pointers were given by all and the team eventually clinched 3rd position under Division BB!

All our student athletes and their family members were satisfied with the good work of the team, and the students wore their medals home proudly, at the end of the day.

A prize presentation ceremony was held in school during Assembly, on Wednesday, 23 May 2012 for the student athletes, firstly to share the good news to all in school and secondly, to further encourage the students. It is very heartening for me to see the students appreciate sports and this would spur me to train the students for other Special Olympics events in the next Semester.
