In keeping the termly tradition of sharing updates with parents and caregivers, the second Eden Parent Communication and Learning Night was held on Friday 17th May 2013 in the Eden School Hall. Helming the evening’s programme were Teacher Victoire Kwek and student Marshal Chua from Class Cayley.
Principal, Mrs Jenny Lai started off the evening by welcoming 6 new teachers to the Eden family. She then shared the Special Olympics (SO) 2013 and provided parents a sneak preview on the athletes training moments. Eden School is sending a contingent for the Aquatics, Bocce and Athletics events and parents were encouraged to support the Edenites at the SO events, happening over the weekend on 1 & 2 June 2013. After the sneak, the hall warmed up and everyone’s spirits went up a notch higher!
The next exciting sharing was on Eden’s inaugural school camp (4th-5th June) where students will be staying overnight in school for the first time. The camp aims to provide a platform for skill generalisation across people and places. The camp is a start of Eden Experiential Trips (E2T) and more students will be involved and wider areas will be explored. E2T aims to expand school activities to Malaysia and even to the Asia Pacific Regions.
After all the exciting sharing, the next segment was rather different. It was a touching photo tribute specially prepared by our Youths-for-Autism interns who will be moving onto their next phases in life. One particular section is the video brought tears to our eyes, where each of them penned down their thoughts on how they have appreciated and what they have taken away from this experience.
Updates completed, next Teachers Mary Jane and Norhashimah shared on behalf of the junior years, the importance and use of visual supports. Learning through visual supports has been a cornerstone of our Eden teaching philosophy. The demonstration by both teachers showed parents real life application and the effectiveness of these supports in teaching our students.
For the senior years update, Level Head Melaine Koh and Job Coach Kah Li shared on the 6 soft skills critical for our students’ development. The 6 skills are communication, hygiene, quality, stamina, safety and speed. Parents are urged to practice and teach these skills at home to maximize their children’s employability potential.
Things begin to get physical next, as our PE Teacher’s Farhan and Hanif came on stage to present the second version of the Eden school workout. Everyone got up on their feet to join in the fitness exercise. On the same topic, our proud parent, Mdm Khatijah, was interviewed by Teacher Hanif on her journey and experience in engaging her son, Ghazali, to work on a treadmill daily at home. The first Eden individual fitness programme saw success in Ghazali, by him losing weight and keeping fit.
To end off the evening, School Supervisor Ms Denise Phua, echoed the importance of a healthy lifestyle for our students. She lastly appealed for A Very Special Walk which is going to be held on 13th July in Pathlight School. The AVSW will be raising funds for the Employability and Employment Centre and all are encouraged to play our parts and welcomed to join in the fun.
